Fat Dissolving Injection

For small, stubborn, pinchable pockets — a targeted answer, not a weight-loss treatment.

20–30 min · 2–4 sessions
Fat-dissolving injection being administered to a small pocket of fat on the body

What it is

An injectable solution — typically deoxycholic acid — that breaks down fat cell membranes in a small, targeted pocket, most commonly under the chin. The body clears the released fat gradually over the following weeks.

Who it's for

Guests with a small, pinchable pocket of fat that doesn't respond to diet or exercise — classically a double chin — rather than anyone looking for general body contouring or weight loss.

What happens at your appointment

We mark the treatment area while you're upright, apply numbing if needed, then place a grid of small injections across the pocket. Sessions run 20–30 minutes, spaced about a month apart.

Results & recovery

Swelling is significant for the first few days — often more noticeable than other injectables — and settles over 1–2 weeks. Visible fat reduction builds gradually over 2–4 sessions.

Questions

Fat Dissolving Injection — frequently asked

Twenty answers written by our physicians.

Does fat-dissolving injection really work?
For small, pinchable pockets like the submental area, yes, over 2–4 sessions. It is not a treatment for general weight loss.
What areas can be treated?
Most commonly under the chin. Some smaller body pockets can be assessed at consultation, though the submental area has the most established protocol.
How many sessions will I need?
Typically 2–4 sessions, spaced about a month apart, depending on the size of the pocket and how you respond to each round.
Does it hurt?
There's a noticeable stinging sensation during and shortly after injection. Numbing cream or ice can reduce this, and most guests find it manageable.
How much swelling should I expect?
More than most injectables — significant swelling for 3–5 days is normal, sometimes looking fuller than before treatment temporarily before it resolves.
Is the swelling painful?
It can feel tight and tender rather than sharply painful. Over-the-counter pain relief and cold compresses in the first 48 hours help most guests.
How long until I see results?
Visible reduction typically starts around 4–6 weeks after a session, once swelling has fully resolved and the body has cleared the affected fat cells.
Is the result permanent?
Yes — the fat cells destroyed in the treated area don't regenerate. Significant weight gain afterward can still add fat elsewhere or to a lesser extent in the treated area.
Can it replace liposuction?
For small, well-defined pockets, it can achieve a similar goal without surgery, but larger areas or looser skin usually respond better to a surgical approach — we're honest about that at consultation.
What is the downtime?
Most guests can return to work the next day, though visible swelling may make you prefer to avoid social events for about a week.
Can I exercise afterward?
Light activity is fine within a day or two; we recommend waiting until swelling has substantially reduced before intense exercise.
Are there risks?
Swelling, bruising, temporary numbness and firmness are common. Uneven results or nerve-related side effects are rare and are covered in the consent you review beforehand.
Will my skin sag afterward?
For most guests with reasonable skin elasticity, the skin adapts as the fat pocket shrinks. Significant skin laxity beforehand may need an additional tightening treatment.
Is it suitable for older patients?
It can be, but skin elasticity is a bigger factor at consultation for older guests, since the skin needs to retract as the fat volume reduces.
How is it different from CoolSculpting or similar treatments?
Both target small fat pockets, but this is an injectable chemical approach rather than a cooling device — the choice often comes down to guest preference and the specific area being treated.
Can men have this treatment?
Yes — the submental area is one of the more commonly requested treatments among male guests specifically.
What should I avoid beforehand?
Avoid blood-thinning medication where possible for 24–48 hours beforehand, and let us know about any swallowing or neck-related medical history.
Will I need a compression garment?
Not typically for the chin area, though we may recommend a supportive wrap or advise on sleeping position for the first couple of nights.
Who performs the injections?
Only physicians and specialist nurses trained in this specific technique — nobody injects at this clinic without a medical licence on file.
Can this be combined with jawline filler?
Often yes, though usually staged across separate visits — reducing the fat pocket first, then assessing whether filler is still wanted for the jawline once swelling resolves.
