What can lip augmentation be used for?

Do lips always look artificial after hyaluronic acid?

No. Whether lips look natural or overfilled depends largely on the starting anatomy, the amount used, where the filler is placed and the treatment goal that was planned. A natural-looking result does not automatically mean using as little hyaluronic acid as possible — what matters is placing the amount where it makes anatomical sense. Lip border or lip volume – what is the difference?

With the lip border, the outline and shape of the lip are what matter. With volume build-up, the body of the lip is treated more strongly to create fullness. The two goals can be combined, but they do not have to be. Particularly at a first treatment, a step-by-step build-up can make sense: more volume can be added later, whereas correcting an already overfilled result is considerably more involved.

• Lip border — treating the contour deliberately can bring out the natural lip shape more clearly, for example when the line between the lip and the surrounding skin appears poorly defined.
• Lip volume — here the three-dimensional fullness of the lip is the focus. The goal can be a subtle build-up or, across several sessions, a more noticeable change.
• Lip shape — not every lip needs the same amount of filler everywhere. Depending on the anatomy, individual areas can be treated so that the existing shape appears more harmonious.

Why are the upper and lower lip assessed together?

A harmonious lip shape comes from the interplay of upper and lower lip. So it is not only the lip you personally want to change that should be considered, but the relationship between the two. Treating only one specific area can certainly make sense — but that decision should be taken on the basis of the overall lip proportion. Before treatment we therefore assess:

• What ratio is already there
• Where volume is actually missing
• Whether an asymmetry exists
• Whether only one area or both lips should be treated
• How the desired change fits the rest of the face

Can lip filler even out asymmetries?

Slight asymmetries can be reduced, depending on the starting point, by varying the placement and dose of hyaluronic acid. Complete mathematical symmetry, however, is neither always achievable nor necessary for a natural result. Almost every face shows differences between the right and left side. The goal of a lip treatment should therefore not be to erase natural individuality, but to even out noticeable differences where it makes sense while preserving the natural lip shape.

How much hyaluronic acid do I need for my lips?

The right amount cannot be determined from a photograph or a general standard alone. It depends on the existing lip shape, the tissue, previous treatments and the desired result. First sessions often use moderate amounts; the typical plan is frequently in the range of 0.5 to 1 ml, provided that suits your individual starting point. More product does not automatically mean a better result. If you want a considerably fuller look, building it up across several appointments can make more sense than one large change in a single session.

Individual lip analysis instead of standard lips

Good treatment planning begins before the injection itself. The lips are therefore not only assessed at rest, but also in movement while you speak and smile. What we look at:

• Natural volume — how much volume is already there, where fullness may be missing, and where additional volume would be unnecessary?
• Lip border — how clearly is the natural contour defined, and should it simply be preserved or deliberately defined?
• Cupid's bow — it shapes the upper lip and, depending on the desired result, can be preserved or subtly emphasised.
• Symmetry — are there differences between the right and left side, or between upper and lower lip?
• Facial proportions — how the lips interact with the nose, chin, jawline and the rest of the features also determines whether a change looks harmonious.

When will I see the result after lip filler?

A change in lip volume is visible straight after the treatment. What you see immediately is not yet the final lip shape, however, because swelling and the tissue's reaction affect the appearance in the first few days. Swelling can be clearly visible in the first 24 to 72 hours in particular. Temporarily, the lips may:

• Look larger than planned
• Appear uneven
• Be tender to pressure
• Show small bruises

Why should you not judge the result straight after treatment?

Because immediately after the injection it is not only the hyaluronic acid that is visible — the tissue reaction contributes to the volume too. Anyone who decides a few hours after treatment that their lips are too big, too small or asymmetric is partly judging the swelling rather than the eventual result. For that reason, additional filler should not be planned on the basis of that first impression alone. As the swelling subsides, the actual shape becomes increasingly visible; a meaningful assessment follows after about two weeks.

How long does lip filler last?

Hyaluronic acid fillers in the lips are temporary. A guide range of about 8 to 12 months is often quoted, although actual longevity can vary considerably from person to person. The lips are one of the mobile regions of the face. How long a visible effect lasts depends among other things on:

• The product used
• The amount placed
• The starting anatomy
• Your individual metabolism
• Lip movement
• Previous treatments

Does lip filler hurt?

How painful a lip treatment feels is individual. To reduce the sensation, a topical numbing cream is used beforehand; many hyaluronic acid fillers also contain lidocaine. The lips are sensitive and well supplied with blood, so pressure, a pulling sensation or brief needle stings can still be felt during treatment despite the numbing. Afterwards the lips can feel tender or tight for a while.

How soon can you be seen in public after lip filler?

Many people can carry on with their normal day straight away. Visible swelling and small bruises are possible, however, and should be factored into your own scheduling. The strength of the reaction is individual: if your work involves close contact with clients, or you have an important public appointment, allow enough time for the swelling to subside.

Lip filler before a wedding, photoshoot or important date

If you are planning treatment before a wedding, a photoshoot, a trip or another important event, the appointment should not fall immediately beforehand. Because swelling and small bruises can be visible for several days, and the lip shape can only be reliably assessed after about two weeks, leaving an appropriate gap makes sense.

Risks and side effects of lip filler

Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid is an invasive treatment and is not free of risk. Common temporary reactions are swelling, redness, tenderness, a feeling of tightness, small bruises and temporary unevenness. Serious complications can occur, though rarely. Further possible complications include:

• Unevenness that persists for longer
• Palpable nodules
• Inflammatory reactions
• Infections

Vascular occlusion: warning signs after lip filler

A rare but serious complication of any filler injection is vascular occlusion. Filler can inadvertently enter a blood vessel or impair the blood supply. A vascular occlusion has to be recognised and treated quickly. If you have severe or increasing pain, striking blanching of the skin or unusual discolouration, contact the clinic immediately or seek medical help. Symptoms like these should not be left until the regular review appointment.

Who may lip filler be suitable for?

Lip augmentation may in principle be an option for adults over 18 who would like to change the shape, contour, symmetry or volume of their lips. Whether the treatment is suitable for you individually is assessed in person. Realistic expectations are an important part of that planning: hyaluronic acid can model the lips, but it cannot completely change every anatomical starting point or fulfil every wish. Relevant factors include:

• Lip anatomy
• The desired result
• General state of health
• Medication
• Allergies
• Previous filler treatments
• Acute infections or inflammation

When should lip augmentation not be carried out, or be postponed?

Depending on the individual situation, treatment should not be carried out or should first be postponed. If you take medication, tell us at the consultation; prescribed medication should never be stopped or paused on your own initiative for an aesthetic treatment. Reasons can include:

• An active cold sore
• Infections in the treatment area
• Inflamed skin at the injection site
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding
• Known relevant allergies to components of the product used
• Certain acute illnesses
• Certain clotting disorders
• Relevant medication or individual risk factors
• Expectations that cannot reliably be met with a temporary hyaluronic acid filler

Lip filler and cold sores

A tendency to cold sores does not in principle rule out a lip treatment later on. During an acute outbreak, however, no injection should be given. In people who are prone to them, a lip injection can trigger a further outbreak. If you get cold sores regularly, tell the person treating you at the consultation.

Aftercare following lip filler

The individual instructions after treatment can vary depending on your starting point. For the first period after a lip treatment, a few simple precautions typically apply. On the first night, sleeping with your head slightly raised can be more comfortable. If you have unusual, severe or increasing symptoms, contact the clinic immediately.

• In the first hours: touch the injection sites as little as possible, keep the lips clean, and cool them briefly and gently if needed
• In the first hours: do not put strong pressure on the treated areas
• In the first 24 hours: avoid intense exercise
• In the first 24 hours: avoid saunas, strong heat and sunbeds
• In the first 24 hours: avoid alcohol where possible
• Do not apply lip products to the injection sites unnecessarily early

Can lip filler be dissolved again?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers can generally be broken down with the enzyme hyaluronidase — which is what distinguishes them from permanent fillers. Dissolving may be an option, after professional assessment, for certain complications or for an unwanted hyaluronic acid result. Hyaluronidase is itself a treatment with its own possible risks, however, and should not be regarded as a simple undo button.
